The War on Global Warming Movies.
By Parker Forman
Even though the world at some point in time will come to an end, weather it is due to global warming or just the fact that it is, our society as a whole and our views alike have truly been altered by and deluded by the Film industry. I say this not in that these films, such as The Inconvenient Truth and Water World, are wrong, but that they are contradicting each other as well as deluding the overall message of Global Warming. Through the creation of these movies the overall message of Global Warming has been dramatized to not only make a profit, but to also create an exciting story. Although these films may be exciting and produce a profit, this whole concept of creating a profit without any of this money going to the Global Warming eradication is appalling and hypocritical. The Inconvenient Truth is just one of these Films that is hypocritical.
Although throughout his film, Al Gore, is seen discussing how we need to stop Global Warming through the act of every person doing there own share in lessening our impacts on the Earth, Al Gore is not contributing his own share. Within this film he is consistently seen either flying on a private plane or driving a Suburban on his family’s huge ranch. Is this what a model spokesman for global Warming should be like? Sure The Incontinent Truth won a Academy award for best documentary, but the life style in which Al Gore is living not only deludes the overall cause, but it also creates a world in which is led by hypocritical lies. How is it that Al Gore got to the award ceremony? He flew on his private plane and then once he got to LA he was driven in a hybrid to the award ceremony after being escorted by a convoy of armored SUVs and secret service. Is it just me or is he so ashamed of his life style that he has to hide it form the public? Or does he think that just doing a little will do a lot in the end result. When he was going to the ceremony he might as well have been driving a Hummer because the short drive from his hotel to the Beverly Hilton would not have made so much more of an impact than that of his usually life style. Al Gore is a hypocritical model for Global Warming and the data as well as his predictions in his film are far to over exaggerated. Sure the earth is getting warmer, but it has been getting warming since the last ice age. The human race has been contributing to the overall cause of Global warming, but hay our Earth has been going through these cycles since the beginning of time, it is natural. As with Al Gore’s graphs shown in the film the future temperature increases are far to over exaggerate. When he gets on the man lift to show what the future would look like within the next few years, the slope of the line on the graph increased to the point that it looked almost vertical. Is that possible? How is it that within the up coming years our generation will sky rocket the temperatures faster than anyone in the history of the world? We can’t especially what is currently being research in the fields of cleaner energy. Although The Inconvenient Truth is filled will exaggerations as well as a poor spokes model such movies like the Water World mislead the viewer in a different way.
Even though Water World was a typical Kevin Costner Film, there were many flaws in its probability of actually happening, which is not surprising. The possibility of the ice caps melting and covering all of the land on Earth is very unlikely. First of all there is not enough glaciers and Ice to be melted in order to cover the whole earth in water and secondly only the lower elevations would be effected if all the Ice caps and glaciers were to melt. If all the Ice and glaciers were to melt I find it ridiculous and inconceivable that the world would be covered in ice, instead I think that In some ways the Inconvenient Truth was right as to what would possibly happen if the temperatures would increase and all ice would melt. In the Inconvenient Truth Al Gore proposed that the Conventional currents of the Ocean would ultimately stop and that would lead to another Ice Age not a land of only oceans. Films such as Water World were ultimately created in order to just produce a profit, however this movie died when it first came out and mad almost no money and with this movie died the over all concept of stopping Global Warming if that was its intention in the first place. Unlike the Inconvenient Truth, Water World was created for financial purposes. These films were alike in that they deluded and glamorized the concept of Global Warming by either being far to boring or so exciting that they lost all meaning. If there was a Film that took both the informational data from the Inconvenient Truth and the excitement of Water World, the concept of Global Warming would be appealing to a larger crowd and thus more action could be taken. Such a movie does exist! The Day After Tomorrow.
The Day After Tomorrow was the perfect Global Warming movie, not in how precise it was, but how it displayed the overall tragedy of could happen if we do not do anything to stop our polluting ways. This movie also displayed the way the government and most people in general feel about global warming and that is that it will not happen in our live times. This common human stereotype is played out by the Vice President in the movie who constantly ignores the oncoming crisis and in the end pays for it with the loss of a lot of American lives. This film took the best parts of two ok movies and created its own super film if you will. It was educational in that it was very plausible outcome to Global Warming but it had the excitement of all Kevin Costner movies combined. Although some aspects of the movie, such as the tornado scenes and the overall speed in which the tragedy happened are debatable, the overall message was far greater than any movie of its class to date.
The Film industry has had a huge impact on the views of such debatable topics like Global Warming. The Film industry has the power to inform the public on this topic. However movies like The Inconvenient Truth and Water World are either to boring for the A.D.D Generation or they are so exciting that they have lost their whole meaning and confuse the viewer. The future is right around the corner and with the help of such movies like the Day After Tomorrow, hopefully the message has gotten through to those who need Riddlin on a daily basis. We need to change now or we may never be able to. The future is in my genreration's hands, lets hope it will stay within our grasps.
